Counseling Framework — In Development

The First Resilience Framework for Earth and Space

McRT — Metacognitive Resilience Therapy — is a pioneering evidence-informed counseling framework in development. Built on a three-layer model of metacognitive regulation, relational responsivity, and contextual adaptability, McRT is designed to support resilience across any context — from everyday counseling practice to the demands of long-duration spaceflight.

The McRT Framework

Three Layers. One Integrated System.

McRT conceptualizes resilience as a multilevel system organized across three interrelated layers. Rather than operating independently, the layers function as a coordinated, feedback-driven system — with reflexivity as the cross-cutting process that deepens awareness and supports integration across all three.

Layer I

Metacognitive Regulation

The foundational layer — encompassing awareness, monitoring, and regulation of thought. Counselors guide clients in recognizing patterns such as worry, rumination, and threat-focused attention, then use attentional control and cognitive decentering to support more adaptive responses. Metacognitive beliefs about the usefulness and controllability of thinking are examined and restructured.

Cross-Cutting Process

"Reflexivity enables individuals to examine feedback loops, identify patterns, and make intentional adjustments across all three layers."

Layer II

Relational Responsivity

The interpersonal dimension of resilience. This layer addresses how internal states influence interactions with others — and how co-regulation, feedback sensitivity, and effective communication sustain relational stability under stress. Critical for both individual and team-based counseling contexts.

Layer III

Contextual Adaptability

The capacity to flexibly align cognitive and relational strategies with changing environmental demands. Particularly relevant in extreme environments — long-duration space missions, polar expeditions, isolated and confined settings — where sustained stress and limited external support require continuous recalibration. McRT is the first counseling framework designed for both Earth and space contexts.

Systems Design
Recursive

Bidirectional feedback loops across all three layers — resilience emerges through continuous cycles of monitoring, feedback, and adjustment.

A New Direction in Counseling

"McRT is being developed to give counselors a unified framework that matches the true complexity of human resilience — one designed to work whether the client is navigating everyday stress or the psychological demands of long-duration spaceflight."

What Sets McRT Apart

Dual-Context Design. The first counseling framework explicitly developed for both Earth-based practice and extreme environments including long-duration space missions, polar expeditions, and isolated and confined settings.
Systems-Based Resilience. Dysfunction is conceptualized as disruption in regulatory relationships across layers — not isolated deficits — enabling more precise and targeted counseling interventions.
Transdiagnostic Scope. McRT is designed to address a broad range of presentations within a single unified framework, reducing the need for multiple specialized approaches.
Reflexivity at the Core. A cross-cutting reflexive process enables clients to detect misalignment, evaluate consequences, and shift from reactive responding toward flexible, context-sensitive regulation.
